National Small Business Week – A Tribute To All Small Business Owners

national small business week

Every year since 1963, the President of the United States has issued a declaration announcing National Small Business Week to honor the outstanding contributions of small business owners and entrepreneurs in the United States of America. This nationwide celebration aims to offer a national recognition to the achievements of entrepreneurs, top small businesses and business advocates, acknowledging their importance
in economic intensification of the country.

Concept and Theme

The head of the US Small Business Administration (SBA), Maria Conteras-Sweet announces that in the year 2015 National Small Business Week will be held from May 4 – May 8, 2015. She states "National Small Business Week is a chance to honor our nation's 28 million small businesses and renew our commitment to fostering the entrepreneurial spirit that is central to the American experience".

This year the theme is "Dream Big, Start Small." The year 2015 marks the celebration of 52nd National Small Business Week in the US.

President Obama Proclaims 2015 National Small Business Week

In his proclamation announcing May 4-8 as National Small Business Week, President Barack Obama recognizes America's small businesses as "the backbone of our economy, employing half of our country's private sector workforce and creating nearly two out of every three new jobs in our country."

The president showing his concern for the entrepreneurs says "We are focused on injecting capital into emerging, entrepreneurial communities, supporting ventures operated by women, veterans, and underserved populations. And we continue to work to open new markets for small exporters because we know trade promotion bolsters our small businesses and their employees."

He draws an end to the proclamation stating "Our small businesses represent what is best about our Nation – the idea that with determination and responsibility, anyone can build a better life for themselves and their loved ones.

There are many good reasons to celebrate the event.

You will be amazed to learn that more than half of the US people either work for or own a small business and the best part is they generate potential employment opportunity. Actually, there are around 20 to 30 million small businesses in America. And they employ about 60 percent of the workforce of the nation. According to SBA "small businesses were responsible for creating two million of the three million new jobs
in the U.S. in 2014".

Moreover, about 54 percent of US sales take place at small businesses. In addition, the small businesses pay about 44 percent of the nation's payrolls. Another vital point that deserves a special mention is that the small business owners in US donate 250 percent more to nonprofits and charities when compared to larger corporations.

To celebrate the National Small Business Week, the US Small Business Administration will host events from May 4 – May 8 in selected US cities. This year small business events will take place at Los Angeles, Miami, Washington, D.C., and New York City. At these events, the US Small Business Administration will honor the top small businesses and business leaders in respective areas.

In order to become eligible for the honor, applicants need nominations, either from any professional trade group, or a business organization or any other business owner. The nominees need to undergo a stringent review process to become the winner. Nominees are chosen by SBA based on their perseverance, longevity, an increase in employee headcount and contributions that they make to the community.

Finally, on May 8 in Washington, the National Small Business Person of The Year will be recognized and awarded. SBA will select the national winner from among the 54 states and regional winners.
