The Brazil elections were one of the most conversed events of 2014 even surpassing the congressional midterms of the US. 48 million users had 674 million interactions pertaining to this election.
World Cup 2014
This is was the greatest event in the history of FB with more than 3 billion relevant posts, likes and comments between June 12 and July 13.
In 2014, the outbreak of Ebola triggered widespread fear and panic, and some fueled by social platforms. There were several phony sites that used FB to spread terrifying rumors, the social site also became the platform where US President Obama made an official response to the Ebola outbreak. The response attracted 15,008 likes and 12,799 comments.
Ice Bucket Challenge
Posts related to the Ice Bucket Challenge were simply unavoidable between June – September. More than 17 million videos related to the event were made public on FB. This was done to raise ALS awareness. Bill Gate’s post attracted as much as 964,600 likes and 40,694 comments.
The news of Robin William’s (the great actor of Mrs. Doubtfire fame) demise in August distressed several of his fans. The news related to his death and possible suicide received 451,102 likes and 20,934 comments.
The news of missing Malaysian Airlines aircraft was the main focus of discussion on Facebook in the month of April, at least for a few weeks.
Conflict in Gaza
Besides World Cup 2014, people also used FB to discuss matters as serious as the Gaza conflict. It was such a discordant issue that FB users ended up losing friends during frenzied tirades. Studies reveal that 1 out of every 6 Israelis severed ties with their FB friends during the disagreement.
Michael Brown and Ferguson
On August 9, 2014, Darren Wilson, a police official from Ferguson shot and murdered Michael Brown who was a defenseless teenager. Surprisingly, FB became a platform to vent out ill-informed views, racially insensible opinions and even a public platform to express thoughtful remarks.
