Reason to Learn Digital Marketing as a Web Developer
Learning non-technical skills can improve your prospects as a developer. In this blog, I will be discussing why Web Developers should learn Digital Marketing and consider leveling it up.
How does web development relate to digital marketing?
Digital Marketing isn’t directly related to Web Development but if you combine coding skills with online marketing skills, you will gain a skill-set that will be beneficial for your career.
So what is digital marketing?
Digital marketing is the combination of all marketing efforts that we are doing digitally or on the internet. Before going any further, it’s important to understand exactly what digital marketing includes. Here is a simplified list:
SEO: Search engine optimization is the process of improving the quality and quantity of website traffic to a website or a web page from search engines. It also helps to improve search engine rankings.
SMO: Social media optimization (SMO) is the use of social media networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc) to manage and grow the online presence of an organization. As a digital marketing strategy, social media optimization can be used to increase awareness of new products or services and connect with customers.
Email Marketing: Email marketing is another digital marketing strategy based on sending emails and developing relationships with prospects and customers. An effective email marketing strategy can convert prospects into customers and turn first time buyers into recurring customers.
Content Marketing: Content marketing is a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to drive profitable customer action.
SEM: Search engine advertising is one of the most popular forms of PPC. It allows advertisers to bid for ad placement in a search engine’s sponsored link when someone searches a keyword that is related to their business offering.
PPC: PPC stands for pay-per-click, a model of internet marketing in which advertisers pay a fee each time one of their ads is clicked. Essentially, it’s a way of buying visits to your site.
SMM: Social Media Marketing (SMM) is a paid internet marketing that uses the benefits of social networking sites as a tool for promoting websites, thus increasing traffic towards them and learning from users’ direct reactions.
Analytics: Web analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of web data for purposes of understanding and optimizing web usage.
Web analytics is not just a process for measuring web traffic but can be used as a tool for business and market research, and to assess and improve the effectiveness of a website.
So what are the benefits of learning digital marketing as a developer?
For instance, many digital marketers rely heavily on data analysis, event tracking, meta tags implementation, loading speed optimization, on-page implementation and running SQL queries. A/B testing and landing page design/mockups are also very common.
All of these relate to coding/design in some way. So if you are a digital marketer, you also should know web development and coding skills.
Programming is a great skill to have, but if you combine programming know-how with digital marketing skills, you are on the path to becoming an in-demand programmer and digital marketer who stands out from the crowd.
